Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS) is a Montessori-based Orthodox religious education program. Each of our catechists has completed 90+ hours of formal training to become certified in a Level 1atrium. CGS is now in its third year at the Basilica and is offered to children ages 3 to 6 years old. Due to greater interest and increased enrollment, our program added an additional class time this school year. Currently, CGS offers a 9:30 am class with 22 children enrolled and an 11:30 am class with an enrollment of 20 children. The atrium (classroom) consists of practical life works, the Altar, Liturgical items, geography of Palestine, Infancy Narratives, Biblical parables, The Good Shepherd works, The Paschal Mystery, Baptism, Eucharist, and the feasts, fasts, and celebrations of the church. Our material and style of learning is hands-on and through the nature of the work, fosters meditation and prayer and a better understanding of the Divine Liturgy. Each class session ends with the children gathered around the prayer table singing songs and reading scripture. Our program follows the Sunday School and church calendar and runs from September through May.
