Catechesis of the Good Shepherd

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS) is a Montessori-based Orthodox religious education program. The atrium (classroom) provides an environment for children to explore the rich proclamations of our faith through the use of materials that the children may handle. Currently, we offer a Level 1 program for children ages three to six years old, preschool through Kindergarten. CGS is also offered as part of the curriculum at The Basilica of St. Mary Montessori Academy (BOSMMA).

We have five certified Level 1 catechists in our parish. Each catechist has completed a formation course that includes a minimum of 90 hours and consists of prayer, presentations, lectures, practicum, with additional hours for observation in an atrium or Montessori classroom.

CGS is part of the Basilica’s Church School Ministry Program and follows the Sunday School and church calendar. CGS runs from September through May. The atrium consists of practical life works, art, the altar, liturgical items, geography of Palestine, infancy narratives, and Biblical parables. Also included are the Good Shepherd works, the Paschal Mystery, Baptism, Eucharist, and the fasts and feasts (celebrations) of the church. Our material and style of learning is hands-on and through the nature of the work, fosters meditation and prayer and a better understanding of the Divine Liturgy.

We are actively seeking people that have an interest in working with young children. Please contact us if you or anyone you know is interested in learning more.
